In Parshas Tzav, the Torah continues detailing the mitzvah of Korbanos, but with a powerful emphasis on consistency. The Torah commands that the fire on the Mizbei’ach must never go out: “Eish tamid tukad al haMizbei’ach, lo sichbeh.”

The Ramban explains that this constant fire represents an ongoing avodah – not just moments of inspiration, but steady, daily connection. The Sforno adds that true closeness to Hashem isn’t only in grand spiritual acts, but in consistency and dedication over time.

We often think growth comes from big changes, but the fire on the Mizbei’ach teaches otherwise. Even a small flame, if it burns continuously, has tremendous power. The avodah of a Jew is to keep that inner fire alive: through regular t’filah, small acts of mitzvos, and quiet moments of connection.

Especially in times that feel overwhelming or uncertain, the Torah reminds us that Hashem values consistency. Showing up, even in a small way, every day – that is our “eish tamid.”

Even today, without the Beis HaMikdash, this message remains. Our t’filos, our effort, and our persistence are the fire that never goes out. Hashem does not only desire great acts; He cherishes our constancy, our commitment, and the steady flame within each of us.
