The corner of 172^nd Street and 73^rd Avenue in Fresh Meadows has an official name: Ilyau Aronov Corner, honoring the builder of the Bukharian Jewish community in this section of Queens. Last Sunday, Councilman Rory Lancman made the renaming official at a ceremony that revealed the street sign carrying the name.

On the lengthy drive from the city line in Lake Success to the Montauk Lighthouse, Plainview resident Brad Kolodny spent four years documenting the synagogues of Long Island. “They represent a microcosm of American Jewish life.”

In the quarter century since he immigrated to New York from Uzbekistan, Eliyahu Rakhminov deservedly earned his reputation as a hardworking and observant family man who maintained a daily presence at Bet Midrash TOV, a Kew Gardens Hills synagogue popular among Sephardic Jews. Last Saturday night, after the end of Shabbos, Rakhminov was fatally struck by a car as he was crossing Jewel Avenue near 140^th Street. “Hatzolah arrived almost immediately to revive him, but he was dead,” said Moshe Verschleiser, who lives on the block and witnessed the scene. “He was taken to the hospital but could not be revived.”

The heavily used Manhattan-bound bus stop on Jewel Avenue at Main Street now has an inspiring mural facing commuters waiting for the bus. “The landlord is a good friend and the neighbors were all for it,” said Chazaq CEO Yaniv Meirov.

This year’s Queens Hatzolah Premier Men’s Event promised to be its biggest fundraiser yet, with a new venue, world renowned talent, and generous food servings. The recently opened TWA Hotel includes the original terminal, the hotel building behind it, and a restored Lockheed Constellation “Connie” plane transformed into a bar. Within the terminal are mannequins and antique cars from 1962, accompanied by Frank Sinatra songs of that period. “I flew TWA when I was in business. It was my primary airline,” said Shiu Reichmann, the Hatzolah coordinator who emceed the event. “We stood in front of the display board and watched for the flight numbers and cities. You had to be on time.”

On Monday night, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz celebrated with her supporters in Forest Hills following the Board of Elections’ statement that after an exhaustive recount, she had a 60-vote lead in the Democratic Primary for Queens District Attorney. “The parties that were the subject of the litigation that’s coming up…were given full, fair, open, and transparent access to every step of these proceedings,” said Board of Elections Executive Director Michael Ryan. “At the conclusion, the faith of the public will rest easy.”
