What is makeup oxidation? It’s what happens to your foundation after it’s been applied.  A change of color occurs, making your skin look darker or more orange over time.  This change occurs for a variety of reasons, such as the PH level of your skin, the natural oils on your face, or even the air around you.  Makeup oxidation is a common problem for many women, especially those with oilier complexions or those that live in humid environments. Ingredients commonly found in foundation, such as iron oxide, are notorious for contributing to oxidation.

Many times, different foundation formulas look similar inside the bottle. However, after application, they appear completely different. Automatically, as the foundation comes in contact with the air and your complexion, it changes color, and often looks completely different than appears in the bottle.

How does one solve this issue? Primers are definitely useful in preventing drastic color changes. In addition, they improve your makeup longevity. Also, loose powder will help create a barrier on the outside. It’s best not to apply too much moisturizer underneath your foundation, as this can encourage oxidation. You can reserve a generous amount of moisturizer or a heavier formula for the night.

Please note that water-based foundation, as opposed to other types of formulas, such as silicone-based, have a higher probability of oxidation, since water is more difficult to stabilize. You don’t necessarily need to avoid water-based formulas altogether, but rather take these facts into account when choosing a shade. You can possibly opt for a lighter shade of base or wear an organic sunscreen underneath.  Since natural sunscreens are derived from titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, they are basically whitening agents and will make the skin appear chalky. Therefore, the oxidized foundation may help balance out the whitening agent.
