Pledges a safe and vibrant city
New York City Mayor Eric Adams swore in Jessica Tisch, 43, as the next commissioner of the New York City Police Department at One Police Plaza, on Monday, November 25, becoming the second woman to head the city’s police department in its storied 179-year history.
Tisch has spent over a dozen years with America’s largest police force and was previously the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner for Information. Since 2022, Tisch has held the role of New York City’s Sanitation Commissioner, fighting the city’s out-of-control rat infestation.
Tisch hails from a prominent Jewish family whose members have been exemplary New York citizens. Her father, James, is the president and co-CEO of the Loews Corporation, which has been spearheaded by the Tisch family since the 1950s. Her mother Merryl is the former chair of the New York State Board of Regents and chairperson emeritus of Met Council. The Tisch family has a stake in the New York Giants and leading roles in top city Jewish nonprofits. NYU Tisch School of the Arts in NOHO and NYU Langone Health’s Tisch Hospital on 1st Avenue in Manhattan each proudly bear the family name.
In 2006, she married venture capitalist Dan Levine, in a ceremony performed by her grandfather, Philip Hiat, a Reform rabbi invested in interfaith programming, at NYC’s Central Synagogue.
