Mauro Playground in Kew Gardens Hills transformed into a vibrant hub of community spirit on Sunday, June 7, as local families gathered for the latest installment of Council Member James Gennaro’s Family Days in Queens program. Presented in partnership with NYC Parks, the free event offered a diverse blend of recreation, creativity, and education, drawing neighbors together for an afternoon of outdoor fun.

The playground buzzed with activity as children and parents moved between a variety of stations spread throughout the park. Under the shade of NYC Parks tents, youngsters immersed themselves in wildlife-themed arts and crafts. Children created custom animal-themed pins, magnets, and keychains, decorated kites with colorful nature designs, and used foam bug stickers to add personal touches to their projects. Other attendees engaged in crafting nature-inspired wreaths decorated with sports and animal motifs.

Elsewhere, children tested their skills in a variety of field games and activity challenges, including hoop-and-pole competitions. Inflatable attractions remained a constant draw throughout the afternoon, while the variety of games encouraged friendly interaction and plenty of laughter. The activities provided opportunities for children to stay active while parents connected with neighbors and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon in the park.

One of the day’s most popular attractions was an interactive wildlife exhibit presented by The Nature Company. The Brooklyn-based organization, which specializes in bringing environmental education to schools, camps, libraries, and community programs, introduced children to the wonders of the natural world through hands-on learning experiences.

Educational displays and live-animal programming gave children the opportunity to explore topics such as ecosystems, camouflage, animal adaptations, reptiles, and conservation. Young attendees eagerly gathered around exhibit tables to observe specimens up close, ask questions, and learn about the remarkable ways animals survive in their habitats.

The event fostered a warm and welcoming atmosphere that reflected the close-knit character of the Kew Gardens Hills community.

The Family Days in Queens initiative continues to bring free family-oriented programming to neighborhoods throughout Council District 24. By combining recreation, creativity, and educational experiences, the program provides residents with opportunities to strengthen community ties while creating lasting memories.
