Four synagogues held their Chanukah parties in Forest Hills and Rego Park: Congregation Havurat Yisrael, Chabad of Forest Hills South, Chabad of Rego Park, and Chabad of Forest Hills North (see article).

Inside Congregation Havurat Yisrael in Forest Hills, Rabbi David Algaze spoke about “the horrific anti-Semitic attack” in Australia. “Chanukah is a time to remember that our enemies assault us on two fronts: the physical existence of our people and the ending of our spiritual heritage.” Unfortunately, both sides of that hatred happened on that day.

“Our mission, as in the days of the Chashmona’im, is to protect and strengthen our traditions and the values that were founded from the days of the Patriarchs and throughout our long history of learning and study. In addition, we must remain vigilant about the actions of our enemies both here at home and in Israel.”

About 100 people enjoyed the camaraderie and the food.

At The Painter’s Playground in Rego Park, more than 120 people attended the Chanukah celebration by the Chabad of Forest Hills South.

Rabbi Schneur Zalman Mergui, the mara d’asra, said, “Originally, the mitzvah of Chanukah candles was outside the house on the doorstep; but with the challenges of our history, the sages in the Talmud modified the law. Since then, Jewish people for generations light the menorah indoors. But 51 years ago, precisely, the first public menorah lighting took place here in the US. Since then, Jews across the world celebrate Chanukah and proudly share this message of light with all of humanity.”

Everyone’s hearts and prayers were with the victims of the terrorist attack in Sydney, Australia.

Dozens of community members, from very young children to seniors with walkers, attended the annual menorah lighting by Chabad of Rego Park at Federoff Triangle Park in Forest Hills.

Rabbi Eli Blokh welcomed Congresswoman Grace Meng, who expressed her unswerving commitment to the safety of the Jewish community.

People joined Chabad students for lively dancing. Children were treated to a fire-juggling show by Shneur Smith, and each child received a $2 bill as Chanukah gelt. Warm potato latkes and doughnuts were given to attendees.
