When I say the word “addict,” no doubt certain images come to your mind. You may visualize a homeless, unkempt person or an alcoholic who drinks daily. Then again, I’m sure the only thing you want negative in your life is a drug test. The truth is that there are forms of addiction that are less overtly dramatic, yet damaging nonetheless.

What do you do when you collide with an annoying person? All positions for annoying people in my life have been filled. Applicants need not apply, thank you. Do you secretly call them disturbed or disordered? Truth be told, most of what is misaligned and off-center within us and others is simple immaturity.

Do you have inner drive and self-motivation? Perhaps you seek excellent grades in school and aim for that promotion at work. I know. Your parents call it “bad grades,” but you call it “still passing.” Listen, kids. A bad teacher is no excuse for bad grades, Google knows it all. You’re up at dawn and your house is always in order. My kitchen cleaner says: “For a clean kitchen.” So I can’t use it. Mine is dirty. Then again, did you ever get excited about a clean sponge at the kitchen sink? When you cleaned your office, you just meant that you made a pathway from your door to your desk. I get it.

Can you close your eyes and imagine a better life than the possibly demanding and difficult one you currently have? If you feel sad or sorrowful, you simply can’t fathom finding that new job or relationship. Some free job advice: If you don’t know what you’re doing, walk fast and look worried. Whenever you feel like quitting, remember how awful it is to write cover letters.

Of course, we wish that no harm will befall us in this life, although it is likely that it will. Can we simply derive satisfaction or comfort from not being sure that it will happen? Optimism surely helps us reduce stress and suffering. It is a healthy coping mechanism for dealing with our unknown future.
