Athletics are an important part of a student’s high school experience, where she can learn to work with others, lead and improve her skills and physical health. Central’s Athletics Luncheon, held on Tuesday, May 30 was a celebration of our athletics teams. It was a chance for Central’s sports teams -- basketball, softball, volleyball, hockey, soccer, and tennis -- to recognize the year’s achievements. Coaches for each team gave moving remarks praising the athletes and distributed awards for overall performance, improvement, and sportsmanship, addressing the entire skill set needed for the student-athlete experience -- talent, resilience, and a deep respect for the supportive bond that exists between teammates. Junior Simona Pitterman was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for her work on Central’s hockey team. “Being on the hockey team this year was incredible,” she said. “I played as goalie for the first time, and it was so much fun to play both as a defenseman and then as a goalie. It was cool to experience both roles, and with the help of my coaches and teammates, it was a very easy transition. I’m so happy to have been a part of the hockey family this year!”

The second annual spelling bee at YSZ was a buzzing event that took place last week. Students in grades one through eight competed against one another as they tackled increasingly difficult challenges in each round of the competition. The school’s ballroom was filled with a sense of unity and support as classmates cheered and encouraged one another. Congratulations to the finalists and winners. The yeshivah’s administration extends gratitude to Principal Rabbi Avraham Fridman and Assistant Principal of Curriculum Mrs. Susanna Yakubova for organizing and executing this wonderful event. A special thanks goes out to moderator Mrs. Ruth Konowitz, and Mrs. Anna Sabzanov, who decorated the ballroom beautifully for the occasion.

The 4th grade girls celebrated the generations that came before them at their M’dor L’dor program last week. Students spent the evening with their mothers and grandmothers, celebrating past generations who gave them the opportunities they have today. Everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner from Central Perk, and the girls did a beautiful job on their performance.  It was a wonderful and meaningful night for everyone!

On Monday, May 22, HALB eighth graders premiered their original Names, Not Numbers© documentary. Names, Not Numbers is a unique Holocaust oral history documentary project in which the students collect oral histories of survivors and create a film based on the experience.
