For the past several years, there has been a growing interest in girls’ volleyball both within YHT and throughout the Queens yeshivah community. With the help of YHT student Sophia Lebovich, word began to spread that Coach Brian Miller was working to establish a school-based league for local yeshivah girls. Coach Miller reached out to athletic directors across Queens, Long Island, and Brooklyn. After many conversations, it became clear that building a successful league would require dedicated leadership, referees, structured rules, and, most importantly, committed schools.
Coach Miller sat down with league commissioner Judah Rhine, and together they developed the league’s first official rules and guidelines. Soon after, several schools – including YCQ, NSHA, and QHA – enthusiastically joined the initiative. Once all the schools were on board, the league officially launched with the goal of giving students an opportunity to compete, grow, and further develop their passion for the sport.
Each team participated in both home and away games, making for an exciting inaugural season. NSHA and YCQ finished with the top records and will compete in the championship game in the coming weeks!
The mission has always been to create meaningful opportunities for students. Alongside Head Coach Lauren Miller and Assistant Coach Sara Schilowitz, Coach Miller was amazed not only by the talent displayed on the court, but also by the sportsmanship, teamwork, and enthusiasm the girls demonstrated throughout this historic first season.
Looking ahead, organizers hope to continue expanding the league next year by adding more teams and creating an even fuller schedule.
In addition, for middle school and high school athletes seeking further development, Coach Lauren Miller and Coach Brian Miller will offer volleyball clinics designed to strengthen players’ skills and fundamentals. The Miller Junior Sports League (MJSL) will proudly introduce a volleyball clinic next school year for yeshivah students eager to learn, improve, and continue growing their love for the game.
