The word t’hilim is the same lashon as the words “tahel or” (“flash forth light”) (Iyov 41:10), because in T’hilim there is only a Great Light. There is no power for din [judgment] to be m’katreig [prosecute]; there is pure rachamim [compassion] and it “sweetens” everything. Therefore, the songs of David HaMelech are called t’hilim, through which it’s possible to work wonders, and there is found no Satan and no bad mishap” (Noam Elimelech, Likutei Shoshanah).
According to the Talmud, “Kol ha’mispaleil b’ad chaveiro v’hu tzarich l’oso davar, hu ne’eneh t’chilah” – One who davens on behalf of his friend and is in a similar situation, he is answered first. As we learn to set aside our own fears and anxiety and say T’hilim for one another, the impact in Shamayim is indelible. Our Sages teach us that there are no t’filos more powerful than those we offer up with –and compassion on behalf of – a Yid who is awaiting a similar y’shuah.
