The Young Israel of Jamaica Estates Adult Education Offerings have hit the ground running to reinvigorate, inspire, and start off 5783 on the right foot. This past Shabbos, they were proud to host a Scholar in Residence Shabbaton featuring up and coming future Jewish educators with students of Yeshiva University’s Graduate Program in Advanced Talmudic Studies. Leora Moskowitz dispelled commonly held notions with her shiur, entitled “Sefer Torah MythBusters” at a Friday night shiur with dessert. Ilana Bauman’s shiur was about “Creating Humanity and Humility: Who Are We?” on Shabbos morning after a sumptuous kiddush in their honor. During Seudah Sh’lishis, Zehava Fertig gave a shiur entitled “Sleeping Through the Torah.” A wonderful and educational Shabbos was had by all.

Leading up to the Yamim Nora’im, YIJE hosted a lecture series where several experts gave lessons that enlightened and helped to unpack the richness of the chagim. Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Zuckier, Research Associate at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, spoke about “M’chilah, S’lichah, and Kaparah: from Tanach to the Siddur.” Rabbi Dr. Raphael Zarum, Dean of the London School of Jewish Studies, gave a shiur entitled “Drowning with Jonah.” Dr. Chaya Sima Koenigsberg, Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at Touro College, presented an enlightened “Perspective on Piyyut,” looking at the significance of Yamim Nora’im illustrations over the centuries.

Rabbi Dov Lerner has resumed his popular Sunday morning Daf HaShavua. This year, they plan to tackle Maseches Makos over bagels and coffee. The Women’s Learning Group will be studying Shmuel Alef. Rabbi Yossi Weinstein will continue his weekly Advanced Talmud shiur.

No time for learning during the hustle and bustle of a work week? “Cycling with the Siddur” with Jon Kramer takes place before Shacharis on Shabbos morning, and “Daf Yom Chaburah” with Rabbi Meyer Waxman takes place on Shabbos afternoon.
