QJL Columnists Hold Partisan Debate

Following the much-discussed forum at the Boca Raton Synagogue last month, where opinion columnists Yair Rosenberg and Ben Shapiro debated each other on anti-Semitism, the Young Israel of West Hempstown hosted its own event, where Moshe Hill and Sergey Kadinsky discussed last year’s political earthquake that awarded all Congressional seats on Long Island to the Republicans, the upcoming presidential elections, and Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal to upzone the suburbs to accommodate demand for more housing.

After a power outage at New York’s JFK Airport caused dozens of flights to be canceled or diverted, crews worked tirelessly to repair the issue overnight. The airport’s operator, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, confirmed that full power had been restored to Terminal 1, which primarily handles international flights. The outage began on Thursday after an electrical panel failure caused a small fire. This led to a range of cancellations and diversions, with some flights even returning to their point of origin. One such flight was Air New Zealand’s, which had to return to Auckland after flying two-thirds of the way across the Pacific Ocean. This resulted in a 16-hour trip that ended where it began. While the restoration of full power to Terminal 1 is a significant achievement, flight activity remains limited. As of Saturday morning, the terminal was open for only 26 of the scheduled 64 arrivals and departures. Eighteen flights were to be handled at other terminals, while ten were canceled. “Concessions will be operating with reduced menu options as activity resumes in Terminal 1 and the private terminal operator will have additional customer service staff in place to assist passengers,” the Port Authority said in a statement.

House Majority PAC, the leading super PAC aligned with Congressional Democrats, is set to launch a $45 million fund aimed at regaining the House majority in next year’s elections by winning back four seats in New York that were flipped by Republicans in the 2022 midterm elections and targeting two other competitive districts. The move comes as New York has become a key battleground for both parties, with 6 of the 18 districts nationwide that President Biden won in 2020 now represented by Republicans. The massive Democratic infusion in New York would far exceed outside spending in recent election cycles and reflects the critical role the traditionally blue state has assumed in the national House battlefield. Mike Smith, president of the House Majority PAC, emphasized that “the path to the majority runs through New York,” adding that this perspective is shared not only by his group, but also by the Republican Party and donors across the country.

A man driving a U-Haul truck went on a violent spree in Brooklyn, hitting nine people and killing one. The driver careened through Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, striking people on sidewalks and bicycles. Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell described the incident as a “rampage.” The police have not yet named the driver publicly, but three law enforcement officials confirmed that his name iscWeng Sor, a man in his early 60s who has had previous encounters with the police and was noted to be “emotionally disturbed.” Investigators believe he may have been living in the U-Haul truck for the past month. The man was initially stopped by police after hitting one person, but he fled in the truck and hit more people before being caught several miles away. Seven men and a police officer were hospitalized with injuries, while the man who died has not yet been identified.
