For the fourth summer, the Bnos Malka Academy will be hosting the Culinary Camp for Teenage Girls. The four-day, hands-on experience is an intensive program from Claire’s Kosher Kitchen. The topics will include, knife skills and food safety, and stocks, soups, and sauces, as well as braising, roasting, and pan searing of beef, chicken, fish, and vegetables. The girls will make artisan breads and fresh pasta, and will learn the secrets of making a French omelet.

The Yeshiva of Central Queens anti-bullying club, Mix It Up, held a “Be Kind Online Lunch,” sponsored and run by advisor Mrs. Melissa Maisel, grade seven Language Arts teacher. Before JHS students walked into the lunchroom, they were given a sticker, and each had different online apps; they then sat at the table that was labeled with their online app. A film made by the Mix-It-Up Club was then shown.

Last week, HAFTR Middle School was privileged to host Deborah Heiser, PhD, Founder and CEO of I.M.A.G.E., and TEDx speaker, as they formally launched their partnership with The Mentor Project. The Mentor Project is an organization that connects students with real-life scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and even astronauts. This mentoring provides students with opportunities to engage with professionals who have experience and hands-on knowledge in different STEM fields, and in exchange ensures that the knowledge gained by the mentor is shared and conserved.

Bais Yaakov of Queens’ fourth grade students are inspired readers! In the beginning of the year, Mrs. Bashevkin’s class began a 20-book challenge, a class contest where each girl is challenged to read 20 books of different genres over the course of the year. For each book or 150 pages completed, they complete a book link, creating a chain of hard work on display in the classroom. Altogether, while they are working toward the class goal, they are also building a class community, rooting for each other, and performing daily computations to figure out how many book links are needed a day in order to reach their next goal.
