Assemblyman Sam Berger, in partnership with Senator Leroy Comrie, recently hosted a successful paper-shredding and shaimos event at Mauro Playground, where more than 200 local residents safely disposed of personal documents and sacred texts.
The event provided community members with a secure and environmentally friendly way to shred personal documents on-site, helping protect sensitive information and reduce waste.
In addition, the event featured a dedicated collection of shaimos — worn-out or damaged Jewish religious texts and items that are buried per Jewish tradition. Over 130 boxes of shaimos were collected to ensure they were treated in accordance with Jewish law.
“It was wonderful to see so many neighbors take part in this event, whether to protect their personal information or to responsibly dispose of shaimos,” said Assemblyman Berger. “The strong turnout shows how much our community values both security and tradition. I’m proud we could provide this service alongside Senator Comrie.”
Residents praised the event for combining practical needs with cultural recognition, making it one of the most well-attended community shredding events in the district.
