At the opening of Sefer BaMidbar, Hashem commands Moshe Rabbeinu to count B’nei Yisrael. Each sheivet, each family, and each individual was counted carefully and deliberately. The Torah teaches that every Jew matters and that every person has a unique place within klal Yisrael.
The midbar – the desert – represents a place that appears empty, yet it is specifically there that Hashem’s presence was revealed. Parshas BaMidbar reminds us that even during times that feel uncertain or barren, Hashem knows each of us by name and never loses count of a single soul.
Chazal explain that being counted expresses love. Just as a precious treasure is counted again and again, so, too, Hashem continually shows His care for His people. Each person carries a mission, a purpose, and a role that no one else can fulfill.
When we say T’hilim for others, we affirm this message: Every name, every t’filah, and every act of care strengthens the unity of klal Yisrael. Through our t’filos, we stand together like the encampment in the midbar – each individual distinct, yet all united around the Shechinah.
May we recognize our own value and the value of every fellow Jew, and may our t’filos bring r’fuah, protection, y’shuos, and lasting brachah to all of klal Yisrael.
