Parshas Yisro teaches a y’sod in avodas haT’filah. Before Matan Torah, Hashem tells Moshe, “Hineni ba eilecha b’av he’anan” – that Hashem will appear in a thick cloud (Sh’mos 19:9). Rashi explains that the cloud was not meant to distance klal Yisrael, but to prepare them for Kabbalas HaTorah.
This teaches that closeness to Hashem does not always come through clarity. At times, a person stands within an “anan,” yet that itself can be a place of kirvah (being close). T’filah is accepted not only when one feels uplifted, but when one stands with hachna’ah and kabbalas ol.
At Har Sinai, the pasuk says, “Moshe y’dabeir, v’HaElokim yaanenu b’kol” (19:19). Even when Hashem’s voice comes with awe and distance, the dialogue remains. So, too, with T’hilim: a pasuk said with yir’as Shamayim, and simplicity pierces the anan.
Parshas Yisro reminds us that t’filah is not measured by emotion but by constancy – to stand before Hashem and speak, even from within the cloud.
