Parshas Noach opens with the words: “Eileh toldos Noach; Noach ish tzadik, tamim hayah b’dorosav” – “These are the generations of Noach; Noach was a righteous man, perfect in his generations.”
Rashi notes that some view this as praise – that Noach remained a tzadik even in a corrupt generation – while others hold that, compared to Avraham Avinu, he would not have been considered as great. The Baal Shem Tov explains that both perspectives are true: Each person is judged according to the challenges of his own generation and the potential Hashem has given him. Hashem does not measure us against others, but rather by how we respond to the circumstances placed before us.
In our own times, surrounded by confusion and distraction, even small acts of emunah and chesed bring immense nachas ruach to Hashem. Just as Noach found chein b’einei Hashem, may our t’filos and the T’hilim we recite draw chein, rachamim, and sh’mirah upon all of klal Yisrael, bringing r’fuah, y’shuah, and n’chamah to all those in need.
