On Monday, December 30, Rabbi Yossi and Dina Blesofsky of Chabad of Northeast Queens brought the community together for their annual grand menorah lighting. As the senior shaliach of all Queens' shluchim, Rabbi Blesofsky has been a guiding force in bringing the joy and light of Chanukah to neighborhoods across the borough. This year’s event, originally planned for Sunday, December 29, was rescheduled due to inclement weather, but the festive spirit was as vibrant as ever.
Held at the Bay Terrace Shopping Center's upper level, the evening offered an exciting mix of entertainment, tradition, and community camaraderie, serving as a centerpiece in a series of Chanukah festivities throughout Queens.
The event featured an array of attractions that delighted attendees of all ages. A nine-foot-tall “Mirror Man,” dazzling like a walking disco ball, captivated the crowd with his illuminated presence. The Tamim Choir brought beautiful harmonies to the celebration, while a fire performer added a thrilling and mesmerizing element to the evening.
Guests were treated to delicious latkes and donuts, steaming hot apple cider, and plenty of Chanukah gelt for the children. Live music set a joyous tone, with attendees dancing and singing along to traditional Chanukah tunes. Prizes and raffles added an extra layer of excitement, creating a memorable experience for everyone present.
The highlight of the evening was the lighting of the menorah, led by Rabbi Blesofsky. With a backdrop of music and community celebration, the nine-foot menorah was illuminated, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. Rabbi Blesofsky shared a heartfelt message, reminding attendees of the significance of Chanukah as a time to spread light, unity, and positivity as we continue to pray for the safe return of the hostages abducted on October 7th by Hamas terrorists from their homes while asleep in Israel. This notion resonated deeply, emphasizing the ongoing connection between the local community and the broader Jewish people worldwide.
The event also saw strong support from elected officials, who came out to join the festivities and show their appreciation for the community. Among those in attendance were NYS Assemblymembers Ed Braunstein and David Weprin, NYS Senator John Liu, and NYC Council Member Vickie Paladino.
The event was made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Schwartz Family and the dedicated efforts of Team S.P.S., who worked tirelessly to ensure the evening’s success. The Bay Terrace Shopping Center provided the perfect venue for the festivities, welcoming families from across the neighborhood to join in the celebration.
Chabad of Northeast Queens continues to play a vital role in fostering a sense of community and connection through its annual Chanukah events. Rabbi Yossi and Dina Blesofsky’s dedication to spreading the light and joy of the holiday is an inspiration to all who attend.
The rescheduled date and competing programs boroughwide proved to be no obstacle for the celebration’s success, as the warmth and unity of the evening left a lasting impression on everyone present. With the glow of the menorah lighting up the night and festivities continuing across the borough, Queens was reminded of the power of light, hope, and togetherness during the holiday season.
