This week, the Early Childhood Division at YSZ held its first-ever Book Club! The students studied the life cycle of a butterfly and witnessed its transformation in the classroom. Each student received a hard copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, allowing them to embark on a journey of discovery and learning.

They developed various literacy skills, such as identifying the different parts of a book, sequencing a story, learning vocabulary words, and retelling a story. These are all crucial skills that children will use throughout their lives as they read.

Math skills were also developed, as the students counted the amount of food the caterpillar ate each day, and they used counting skills to create bead caterpillars. The students were also excellent scientists, using magnifying glasses to observe the caterpillars and studying each stage of the butterfly lifecycle in depth.

Art activities were also a part of the experience, such as creating coffee filter butterflies and using watercolors to make pencil cases – an art medium that Eric Carle himself used. The students were so enthusiastic to take their book club bags home to share and read with their families!
