On Tuesday, April 14, the Yeshiva University High School for Girls (Central) marked an important date on the calendar: Yom HaZikaron LaShoah v’LaGevurah, also known as Yom HaShoah, Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day. In the midst of end-of-year preparations, the school community paused to recognize the significance of the day and reflect on the enduring impact of the Holocaust and the resilience of its survivors.
In the morning, guest speakers visited campus to share their experiences. Mr. Marty Werber, the great-uncle of YUHSG sophomore Jackie Marmer, addressed the ninth and tenth grades, while Mrs. Helga Luden, the aunt of YUHSG faculty member Mrs. Betty York, spoke to the 11th and 12th grades about her experiences during the war. Students and faculty alike are deeply grateful to both Mr. Werber and Mrs. Luden for their time and generosity, as well as to the Director of Student Activities and Judaic Studies faculty member, Mrs. Sydney Yaros, who coordinated the day’s programming. The observance concluded with an afternoon museum-style gallery walk presented by Mrs. Yaros’ senior-level History of the Holocaust class.

With the spring semester comes the beginning of the season for several YUHSG athletics teams. On Monday, April 13, YUHSG softball played its first game of the season against SAR, with their second game scheduled against SKA on Friday, April 18. This year’s softball team offers strength in experience, said its head coach, YUHSG Engineering faculty member Mr. Michael Spindel. Seniors Shira Canter, Atara Feldman, and Gila Moskowitz serve as team captains, with 2025 YUHSG graduate Ava Reschke returning to campus to serve as assistant coach.
YUHSG’s hockey team has also gotten a strong start to the season. Under the guidance of their head coach, YUHSG Head of Security Mr. Louis Garza, YUHSG’s hockey team has grown into a strong, experienced group skilled at collaboration and strategy, with seven juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman – a few of whom are new additions. Hockey offers students strong life skills in addition to the thrill of playing. The team, captained by juniors Noa Berman, Maya Goykadosh, and Annabelle Klein, won against North Shore in an overtime round on Tuesday, April 14, with junior newcomer Ma’ayan Kotkin scoring the winning shot.
