The Yeshiva of Central Queens (YCQ) campus was filled with a spirit of teshuvah and inspiration this past Motzaei Shabbos, September 13, as over 100 students, parents, and alumni gathered for a meaningful Family Selichot program.
The evening began with a powerful and thought-provoking shiur from Rabbi Shmuel Marcus, who delved into the essence of teshuvah. Rabbi Marcus framed teshuvah not merely as atonement but as a process of “returning to closeness with Hashem and living with constant awareness of His presence.”
He challenged the audience to cultivate this awareness beyond moments of tefillah and integrate it into daily actions and conversations. Rabbi Marcus acknowledged the unique challenges of the modern era, noting how distractions like smartphones can pull one’s focus away from this spiritual goal. He described teshuvah as an extraordinary kindness from Hashem—an opportunity to realign one’s will and make a sincere choice to live differently.
To illustrate the power of ratzon, Rabbi Marcus shared the inspiring stories of two remarkable individuals. He spoke of Avichai Sheli, the blind and partially deaf international Chidon HaTanach champion, who powerfully stated, “If you really want something, nothing can stop you. It doesn’t matter how hard it is.”
He also recounted the story of Yosef Mendelevitch, the legendary Soviet refusenik. YCQ students were familiar with his story, as they had the z’chus to hear him speak in person this past April. These examples served as a potent reminder that with true desire, any obstacle can be overcome.
Following the shiur, the community joined together for a beautiful Selichot service, led by Rabbi Ophie Nat, a YCQ Junior High rebbi and professional Jewish musician.
YCQ extends a special thank-you to Rabbi Marcus, Rabbi Nat, all those who attended, and a shout-out to the alumni who returned to their alma mater for the event. Wishing everyone a Shanah Tovah u’Mesukah.
