Man Sentenced in Fatal Shooting of Detective Jonathan Diller in Far Rockaway
Guy Rivera was sentenced Monday to 115 years to life in prison for the 2024 fatal shooting of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller and the attempted murder of Sergeant Sasha Rosen. The 36-year-old was convicted earlier this month of aggravated manslaughter, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise ordered the sentences for each charge to run consecutively: The total term includes 25 years for manslaughter, 40 years for attempted murder, and 50 years for two counts of weapon possession. The sentencing stems from a March 2024 traffic stop in Far Rockaway. Rivera ignored commands to exit a parked car and fired a pistol at Diller, striking him below his bulletproof vest. Rivera then aimed the gun at Sergeant Rosen’s chest and pulled the trigger, but the weapon jammed. Despite his mortal injuries, Detective Diller managed to disarm Rivera before collapsing.
“Today’s sentence does not erase the tragedy of March 25, 2024, but it ensures that this defendant will never be free again to terrorize the streets of New York City,” said District Attorney Melinda Katz. A second defaced firearm was later recovered from the vehicle. Rivera’s co-defendant, Lindy Jones, remains in custody on weapons charges.
