Summer is officially here, which means schools are closed and the kids are home, getting ready to go to summer camp. In the interim, plenty of families are looking for ways to entertain their kids. So Chazaq, in conjunction with Councilman James F. Gennaro, the Queens Jewish Community Council (QJCC), Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island (JCCGCI), and NYC Cultural Events organized a free children’s Jewish cultural carnival at Yeshiva Central Queens this past Sunday, June 26, open to the entire community.
It was a sweltering day, with temperatures in the 90s, but the organizers came prepared with a cooling station on-site and over 1,200 bottles of water for all attendees to keep cool and hydrated. The Chazaq carnival featured appropriate carnival booths, such as a ring toss, knock-out, bowler roller, and Captain Hook, which came with penny prizes for winners. There were several large inflatable games that included a safari adventure, obstacle course, bounce house, and large dual slides for children. Then, for the even younger children, the carnival featured a mini-carousel, mini-hoops, pirate ship, and slides. Musical entertainment included a concert by singer Nachas and music by DJ Avraham.
The carnival also had cotton candy, balloon animals, and photo magnets printed and distributed on the spot, free of charge to each attendee. The event included brief remarks by the sponsor, Council Member James Gennaro, as well as State Senator Leroy Comrie, Assembly Member Andrew Hevesi, and Rabbi Daniel Pollack on behalf of Congress Member Grace Meng.
