Emet Outreach has added “parenting” to the impactful and relevant topics at their monthly Couples Division workshops. Interested participants gathered at the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills for the first session on “Parenting 911: Using Ancient Values in Modern Times.” The class, which was taught from a Torah perspective, was a welcome offering. “As many of our alumni are now raising families, Emet is growing along with them,” said Rabbi Akiva Rutenberg, Emet Co-Founder and Director. “We’re always looking to support our students at every stage of their spiritual and personal journey, so parenting is the latest milestone on the continuum of classes we want to share.”
The evening began as couples mingled over a sushi buffet and wine tasting. Shay Yonaiev, Emet’s Couples and HR Director, greeted everyone. Rabbi Rutenberg, who is also a licensed clinical social worker with a specialty in couples counseling, began the presentation. He talked about the importance of setting “healthy boundaries” for children and the need for parents to “lead by example” and be “role models” for their children.
The next part of the workshop was led by Rabbi Simcha Feuerman, LCSW-R, DHL, a noted family therapist and author. Rabbi Feuerman provided a worksheet with meaningful references on parenting from the Talmud. After delving into each example, he invited the couples to think about and discuss how to apply them to their experience of childhood behavior, human nature, and parenting.
